'If you saw
him coming down the street, you might cross to avoid him. Far
from the stereotype of the shy retiring writer, with his
shaved head and bulging biceps, Justin Hill looks more like a boxer
than a writer,' South China Morning Post

Gemini, of course
Current listening:
Strange Little Girls, Tori Amos
Children's current favourite bedtime book:
Squash and a Squeeze
On the bedside table:
The
Guardian Weekly, oh and I'm reading Stephen Owen's anthology of Chinese
literature again. And I've been looking at the pictures in Interzone 204
Recent films:
Beowulf and Grendal, which was surprisingly not too bad.
Visually impressive, though the script was appalling. I should
add I'm a rapid critic of film scripts. Note to self after
five minutes -MUST visit remote and inhospitable parts of Iceland.
Most impressive were the black beaches. I'm going to crow-bar
it into my next novel: Black sea and black beach and gnawing white
surf
Books
I've bought and still not read:
A
1935 guidebook called In Search of Old Peking, is calling out to me,
and in a Borges twist I'm very excited to discover places which no
longer exist. I also got sent Qiu Xialong's latest Shanghai
detective novel, which I really must finish. For
research on the next novel I'm avoiding The Prose Edda and Poetic Edda
Recent web trivia: on-line IQ
test, I'm 131,
apparently...but as I stand at the sink and do the washing up it
strikes me that I should be doing more with my life - and that the
results are probably boosted in an attempt to sell you something.
The results sheet told me I could be a writer, which was pleasantly
reaffirming, although part of me is still aspiring to be a writer and
that still aspiring writer felt a glimmer of hope and thought - maybe
one day I'll get published... when i read that. Odd.
I wonder if other writers have the same feeling. I imagine
they do. Once published concerns rapidly progress to sales
figures, marketing and walking around bookshops turning your book
face on. My mother must drive the bookshops of Yorkshire crazy
Where
I go to when I go to the web
-
Dr Joy Browne
I think the world would be a worse place without Dr Joy, which is
about as good a compliment you can give
-
In
Our Time funny how the topic is always relevant to what I 'm
thinking about
-
The Warmongerclub
where me and some pals hang out, although like other virtual
communities I've never met quite a few of them
-
Featured site:
www.owensheers.com
- I met Owen once after a reading; reviewed
his book The Dust Diaries, and shared agents at one point.
Other than that I really don't know him, except for the fact that
he's writing the most interesting poetry in Britain at the moment.
Check him out

A
special welcome also to Justin Hill, who describes himself
a sports journalist in Iowa, who says his love is 'long-form
journalism'.
